Klezmer returns to Cityfolk Festival this weekend

Klez at Cityfolk

The Chicago Klezmer Ensemble featuring Brave Old World clarinetist Kurt Bjorling will perform at the Cityfolk Festival on Sunday, July 3 at 2 and 6:30 p.m. at the NCR Family Stage on St. Clair Street next to Memorial Hall.

Founded by Bjorling in 1984, Chicago Klezmer has played at venues and festivals throughout America as well as at international festivals showcasing Jewish culture in Germany, Poland, Canada and the U.K.

Unlike many klezmer bands, which play primarily jazz-influenced dance music, Chicago Klezmer looks for its inspiration past the early American klezmer bands, back to an earlier era of European klezmer, when the music functioned both as dance music and as sophisticated concert music.

The Cityfolk Festival, presented at River-Scape MetroPark, features numerous folk music and dance ensembles performing July 1-3. Admission is free. For more information, call 223-3655 or go to www.cityfolk.org.
