Israel to honor Righteous Gentile and family in Dayton ceremony
On Wednesday, June 29 from 4-6 p.m. at the Dayton Art Institute, Mid-Atlantic States Israeli Consul General Uriel Palti will award Marinus Bosma and his late parents a medal and official certificate of honor from the Yad Vashem Institute in Israel, the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Authority. Bosma, who lives in Tipp City, and his late parents will receive the title Righteous Among the Nations for risking their lives to rescue Jews during the Holocaust.
Natives of Arnhem in the Netherlands, the Bosmas helped find shelter for at least 30 Jews and they themselves housed at least 12. In 1943, Bosma and his father brought the last group of Jews to Amsterdam where they were handed over to another group that helped them escape to Belgium. Between 1943 and 1945, the Bosmas were in hiding as members of the Dutch underground.
The opening of the Max May Memorial Art Contest and a wine and hors d’oeuvre reception will begin at 4 p.m., with the award presentations at 5 p.m. For more information, contact Jewish Community Relations Council Director Rena Neiger at 610-1555.
