Family fun, film screening at Israel Independence Day celebration

Yom Ha’atzmaut 2009

Ido Port and Alfred Molina in The Little Traitor

This year’s community Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration will be held on Wednesday, April 29 from 5:30-9 p.m. at Temple Israel. In addition to food for purchase from Bernstein’s Fine Catering, carnival games, face painting, and craft activities for children, the DJCC’s Dayton Jewish International Film Festival will present a screening of The Little Traitor. Set in Palestine in 1947 a few months before Israeli statehood, the film is based on the novel Panther in the Basement by Israeli author Amos Oz. Its focus is an unlikely friendship between the 12-year-old “Proffy” Liebowitz (Ido Port), who wants the British out of Palestine, and British Sergeant Dunlop (Alfred Molina). Sponsors of the Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration are the DJCC; the Jewish Federation; the Dayton Jewish International Film Festival; the Synagogue Forum: Beth Abraham Synagogue, Beth Jacob Synagogue, Temple Beth Or, Temple Israel; and Hillel Academy.
