At the American Jewish Press Association’s annual conference, held in Scottsdale in June, The Dayton Jewish Observer received the first-place award for excellence in feature writing for newspapers with up to 7,499 circulation.
The winning piece, The Fall of the Aryan Nations by Marshall Weiss, was published in the January 2009 issue; it describes the FBI’s infiltration of the hate group and how the FBI thwarted a plot to assassinate Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center. This is the fourth first-place award The Observer has received from AJPA. The Observer is published by the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton.
At the AJPA conference, Weiss was also elected first vice-president of the organization. AJPA represents approximately 250 newspapers, magazines, Web-based media, and individual journalists, with a combined readership of more than 2.5 million individuals.
