Hyman J. “Mitzi” Carne age 93 of Dayton, passed away Feb. 24 at Hospice of Dayton. Mr. Carne was a graduate of Stivers High School, Class of 1937 and Sinclair College’s (Dayton YMCA College) first graduating class held at the YMCA. In 1941 he joined the U.S. Army. He was one of the first in Dayton to be drafted and one of the last to return home. Mr. Carne gave 37 loyal years of service to our nation as a soldier in the U.S. Army and as a civilian employee at Wright-Patterson AFB. He was an active member of Beth Abraham Synagogue and its men’s club and was a past member of the synagogue board. He also volunteered with the senior meals program at the Jewish Federation’s Jesse Philips Building, Hillel Academy and Miami Valley Hospital’s Senior Care Program, and in the community at large. He was a charter member of Dayton Post 587 of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States. He received many community awards for his service. He was known as Uncle Mitzi to his family, friends and the community. Mr. Carne was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Elizabeth Carne. He is survived by his brother, Arthur (Marlene) Carne; nephews, Steven (Judith) Carne, Richard (Cheryl) Carne, of Dayton, Edward (Anita) Carne of Long Grove, Ill., and Daniel Carne of New York; the loves of his life were his grandnieces, Meagan, Christina, Abra (Jon) Adrabi, Natalie, Eve, Sarah and Rebecca. Interment was at Beth Abraham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton or Beth Abraham Synagogue.
Betty D. Glickler, formerly of Columbus, a resident of Dayton for more than five years, passed away peacefully on March 17. She was only a few weeks from her 99th birthday. Mrs. Glickler was a beautiful, stylish and elegant lady. She made friends easily and loved to make people laugh and smile. She endeared herself to so many in her short time in Dayton. Although Mrs. Glickler had been involved in many community and religious organizations, her family was her priority. She adored her parents and sisters and did so much for her two sons. Mrs. Glickler was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert H. Glickler, in 1998. Also preceding her were her dear parents, Ben and Mary Davis; her four loving sisters, Lillian Plotnick, Ann Daroe, Rose Zollett and Jeannette Gurevitz. The five Davis girls had a very special bond and Mrs. Glickler spoke of them fondly until the end. She is survived by her two sons, Allen Glickler of Columbus, and Larry S. Glickler and his life partner, Charles L. Quinn Jr. of Dayton; also a very special niece, Sharon Zollett London, and her husband, Ellis London of Boston; and many dear and special friends. Interment was in Columbus. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Glickler’s memory to Temple Israel or Hospice of Dayton. Also, the care and love given by Hospice of Dayton in her final week will never be forgotten.
Saul Nathanson, age 71 of Springboro, passed away March 12 at his residence. Mr. Nathanson worked as a furniture buyer at Elder Beerman, was employed at Morris Furniture, and retired from Kemp Furniture in North Carolina. He was a member of Beth Abraham Synagogue and Temple Beth Shalom in Middletown for many years. Mr. Nathanson is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters and son-in-law, Claire Terry Nathanson of Springboro, Aimèe and Robert Eninger of Albuquerque; sister and brother-in-law, Edie and Bernie Gilmore of Connecticut; grandchildren Charlotte and Grant Eninger; and many other relatives and friends. Interment was at Beth Abraham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Hospice of Dayton, American Cancer Society, or Beth Abraham Synagogue in Mr. Nathanson’s memory.
Trina Ella Shuchat of Palm Springs, Calif., passed away Feb. 23 shortly after celebrating her 99th birthday with family and friends. Ms. Shuchat was born Feb. 11, 1914 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Israel Charles and Dora Shuchat of Piqua. She was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Samuel and Joseph. She graduated from Piqua High School and moved on to work in New York then Chicago, Los Angeles and finally Palm Springs. As an ardent Zionist and a life member of Hadassah, Ms. Shuchat supported Israel constantly with letters to politicians and statesmen. She enjoyed her work with the American Friends of Hebrew University both for the good the association does and for the celebrities she was able to meet. Ms. Shuchat had great style. She loved fashion design and was a “fashionista” of sorts. She was known for her beautiful clothes. While living and working in Chicago, she spent hours every week in the fabric department at Marshall Fields, bought the classiest Vogue patterns, and made all of her own clothes. She always enjoyed looking her best, and her nieces loved to surround her to watch her put on make up. She will be missed by her nieces, Francine (Marc) Shaw and Eve (Jim) Brown and by her nephew Gary (D.D.) Shuchat. She is also survived by great-nieces and nephews Shauna (Dan) Maher, David (Sonya) Shuchat, Steven Shuchat, Matthew Shuchat, Joshua (Cari) Brown, Adam (Julie) Brown and Beau Shaw. Interment was at Beth Abraham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
Lou Solko, age 73 of Dayton and Phoenix, passed away March 17. Mr. Solko was a longtime pharmacist at Bettman’s Pharmacy. He is survived by his wife, Rita; son Dave and his wife Ufuk; daughter Amy; sister Rose (Jim) Gabster; brother-in-law Rick (Jane) Wasserman; many nieces, nephews and good friends. Interment was at Riverview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Temple Israel or Crossroads Hospice.
