Bernard S. Apfel, age 89 of Trotwood, passed away on Jan. 24. He is survived by his sons Phillip and Raymond, his granddaughter Shannon, and grandson Jarid. He was preceded in death by his daughter Joannie (2002) and his wife Ida (2007). A World War II veteran, Mr. Apfel moved from New York to Dayton where he married and raised three children. He worked long hours for little pay yet provided everything his family needed. Mr. Apfel was a loving father and husband, and an excellent role model. While he enjoyed sports, music, movies, and trivia, Mr. Apfel especially loved his family and they loved him. He will be greatly missed. Interment was at Beth Abraham Cemetery. Ruth O. Barr, 97, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away in St. Louis on Jan. 28. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Seymon L. Barr, and is survived by son Lewis (Miriam) Barr of Pepper Pike, daughter Cathy (Randy) Arst, of St. Louis, grandchildren David (Kelly) Barr, Jennifer (Dr. Philip) Michaelson, Brad (Alissa) Arst, Gregg Arst, and eight great-grandchildren. Contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Theodore Bernstein passed away on Feb. 8. He is survived by his wife, Janice Tannenbaum Bernstein; his children, Susan (Dr. Jeffrey) Mikutis and Judy Bernstein; and three grandchildren, Joshua and Amanda Mikutis and Hannah Hyman. At Mr. Bernstein’s request, his body is being donated to the Humanities Gift Registry. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Cantor Joyce Ury Dumtschin, age 56 of Centerville, passed away Feb. 14. Cantor Dumtschin was a graduate of Northwestern University and received her master’s degree from Marshall University. She was certified by the American Conference of Cantors and the Cantors Assembly. She was the former cantor at Temple Beth Or. She was a member of the Noble Circle. Cantor Dumtschin is survived by her husband, Irwin; son, Nathan; and daughter, Rachel; parents, Bernard and Helen Ury; two brothers, Allen B. (Rene) Ury and Daniel G. (Dara) Ury; sister-in-law, Nancy (Larry) Katz; four nephews, Robert, Adam and Noah Ury and Matthew Katz; niece, Danielle (Bryan) Howell; aunt, Carole (Edward) Casper; uncle David Robert (Beverly) Belzer. Interment was at David’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Association or Beth Abraham Synagogue.
Jeffrey S. Kaplan, age 47 of Centerville, passed away Jan. 31. Mr. Kaplan worked for Value City Furniture for 10 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Marshall Kaplan. Mr. Kaplan is survived by his daughter, Mallory Kaplan; mother, Judith Kaplan; sisters, Lori McElroy, Naomi Kaplan and Lisa Connor; uncles, Leonard (Cheri) Kaplan, Richard (Tina) Koncler; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Interment was at David’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Crohn’s and Collitis Foundation in his memory.
Harriett J. Levy, age 87, passed away Feb. 12. A longtime Dayton resident, Mrs. Levy loved life and was loved by many. She led an active life, passionate about travel, pottery and the arts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Levy, and brother, Norman Miller. She is survived by her children, Phillip (Shauna) Levy, Janet Levy, Michael (Jane) Levy and David (Cathy) Levy; two grandchildren, Hannah and Samuel Levy. Interment was at Riverview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sinclair Community College Ceramics Program, Dayton Philharmonic or Temple Israel.
Martha W. Schriber, age 97, formerly of Dayton, passed away Jan. 26 in Naples, Fla. Mrs. Schriber was preceded in death by her husband, Max, brother, Samuel Walderman and sister, Neddie Mae Elkus. She is survived by her three sons and their wives, Dr. Robert (Stephanie) Schriber of Dayton, Michael (Christina) Schriber of Santa Fe, and James (Karen) Schriber of New Milford, Conn.; eight grandchildren, Dr. Andrew (Rebecca) Schriber, Elisabeth (Sarah) Schriber, Joshua, Jasper, Emily, Sebastian and Stella Schriber and Heidi Nawab; eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Interment was at Beth Abraham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Israel or Beth Abraham Synagogue.
