Jewish Observer wins two statewide awards

Ohio SPJ Awards 2009

In September, The Dayton Jewish Observer received two awards from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists.

Rabbi Bernard Barsky

Winning the 2009 First Place Award for Best Religion Reporting was Rabbi Bernard Barsky of Beth Abraham Synagogue for the article Jewish Perspectives on Abortion in the November 2008 issue.

Marshall Weiss, editor and publisher of The Observer, received Ohio SPJ’s Second Place Award for Best Medical/Science Reporting for the feature Coping with Canavan Disease in the June 2008 issue.

Ohio SPJ gives print awards in two categories based on circulation: above 100,000 and below 100,000.

Since The Observer began entering this competition in 2001, it has received four first-place awards from Ohio SPJ and nine awards overall.

The Observer was established in 1996; it is a publication of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton.
